Then they just do another take, you have to ruin it in a way they don't catch until they go to edit.

2.4k

Because then they would stop dancing! Better that they do their whole dumb routine and realize later that their video has been rendered useless. He’s playing the long game.

855

u/The_cogwheel Feb 08 '23

Exactly, wait for them to figure out the shot was ruined when they go to edit it and upload it, not when they can easily delete and retake.

Bonus points if you make it into the final video.

u/SnooGoats409 Feb 08 '23

One summer camp I worked at I made it my goal to get into every picture but never be the main attraction. I was tagged by my father in like 90% of the photos that were taken. I made it into so many. Ngl was my proudest achievement that year.

240

u/kategoad Feb 08 '23

Yep. When I was an intern in DC, my side quest was to make it into as many shots on C-SPAN as I could. I Walked behind so many press conferences.

My brother in law works for abc news in Australia but for the online arm, the one time he's been to the broadcast studio he made it his business to walk through the back drop - the abc bull pen - as many times as humanly possible without seeming like a total crazy person. I push a cart between them and the camera, then stop and look around and pretend to be oblivious.

254

u/turdlepikle Feb 08 '23 Wholesome Take My Energy

For some reason I pictured this as a modern Mr. Bean sketch, but he is actually oblivious. He stops the cart, and with a confused look on his face looks in every direction for some sort of sign, then he looks at his shopping list in his hand and has an "a-ha" moment and decides on a direction. Just as he pushes the cart out of the frame and the person restarts their video, Mr. Bean crosses through the frame again because he went in the wrong direction.

What I also found hard to watch was the girl with the camera walking closer and then farther away, closer and then farther away. Watching it on her phone didn’t make it any better, and the final video with that back and forth isn’t even an artistic improvement. Is that girl even dancing? What is that called? It just looks like she’s spazzing out. Omg I think I’m getting old.

I just came to say the same thing. I watched a college basketball game last year and the dance team was terrible. It was all upper body movements and very stiff in the legs and hips. It looked ridiculous and the choreography was definitely 99% moves pulled from TikTok. Enough people complained that now actual dance schools are invited to perform at the halftime shows. It's really sad when a bunch of 14 year olds are showing up college dancers.

I suspect that it's rage bait. Not saying that these kinds of entitled people don't exist but everything just seems too "perfect" with the person filing the whole thing like that. I'd be curious to know the original source of the video, whether it is the woman herself who posted this, and if not whether the original poster links the woman's TikTok. The amount of rage bait these days is absolutely insane, but when you see how much attention and engagement it gets (like in this very post) it's pretty predictable.

333

u/Dr_Rockso89 Feb 07 '23

I suspect that it's rage bait.

This becomes very clear when you realize that someone is filming the girl who is filming the dancing girl. The content isn't the dance, it's "kids these days blocking the public to RECORD their TikToks."

I wonder what possesses someone to think "I'm going to go out in public to a crowded area and do a dance to no sound ask a friend to record, edit and post online later, people will love this".

I also wonder what the friend thinks when they get the call "hey will you come record me doing a dance in the middle of Costco".

3.5k

u/Nihilism-1___Me-0 Feb 07 '23

I'm just honestly baffled as to why they don't just do this at like public parks or nature trails.

  • wide open space

  • not a lot of people who will get in the way of your shot.

  • the scenery is a LOT more beautiful than some dingy ass Costco

  • Lots of natural lighting

Like....why????

1.3k

u/1-760-706-7425 Feb 07 '23

For real. you're getting in the way of shoppers trying to go about their day, and your background is also ugly?? Like what's the plus side here. Maybe she thinks Costco will sponsor her for this terrible video

306

u/Alchemyst19 Feb 07 '23

Costco does not advertise or sponsor influencers. It's corporate policy. If that's the thought, they picked the worst possible company to try this.

173

u/nint3nd0nt Feb 07 '23

Lol yep. Even if Costco did give sponsorships, I don't think it would go to someone actively inconveniencing their customers. But I would not be surprised if she thinks she will simply because this is main character syndrome.

109

u/Alchemyst19 Feb 07 '23

My local store would absolutely kick her out for this. You don't block the horseshoe with inane stuff. Maybe a side aisle, but definitely not one of the main ones.

65

u/machina99 Feb 08 '23

You don't block the horseshoe

First time I've heard of the main aisles called the horseshoe but it absolutely makes sense

62

u/Alchemyst19 Feb 08 '23

Oh, it's absolutely intentional. The chickens are at the back of the store, at the end of the horseshoe. You go in one way, stop by all the side aisles to see what neat new things they stocked / moved around, grab a chicken and/or meat at the end, then go out the other side.

Nothing about the layout of a Costco is accidental.

I don't understand how people can do this without any embarrassment.. They're not even doing it to be funny. They actually think highly of whatever it is they're doing. What even is this?

5.0k

u/Dazzling-Yam-1151 Feb 07 '23

Some of them get paid large amounts of money for making tiktoks. Idk if they care at that point if the video is funny or serious. I could never do it, and I get second hand embarrassment when I see people filming tiktoks irl but if they cash their check at the end of the month (or however it works on tiktok) I bet they dgaf about how embarrassing it is.

2.3k

u/WH1TE-W0LF Feb 07 '23

Tik tok doesn't really pay much money. It's the fact that growing a following opens people up to the opportunity for corporate sponsorships, which pay A LOT of money.

1.1k

u/burman07 Feb 07 '23

Just came here to say this. Not a big fan of him but scrolled across an interview where KSI talked about the money behind tiktok. 9+M followers and 70+M views at the time and he said he’d made a grand total of $3000 out of that. Needs to reach almost 25,000 people to make ONE dollar.

248

u/ljb2x Feb 07 '23

KallMeKris said something similar on an episode of Linus Tech Tips. The money on TikTok comes from leveraging your audience to companies and becoming an advertisement or pivoting to YouTube and hoping you can get them to follow.

89

u/pmartin1 Feb 07 '23

Which is when her stuff started getting less funny and interesting. I still watch her stuff from time to time, but it’s nowhere near as good as her early stuff.

58

But with that following he could make $10,000 a post per hidden sponsorship and way more with direct sponsorship.

Or pivot that into Patreon or Onlyfans to easy 6 figures a year.

"Content creators" like this forgo any natural embarrassment because they are desperate to get their views up so much. When people make it their whole character, nothing else really matters.

246

u/Nice-Violinist-6395 Feb 07 '23

Honestly, when someone has such an extraordinary lack of shame but isn’t otherwise being an asshole (like all the gym people who don’t understand that it’s a public place and they do not own their camera’s line of sight), I almost have to respect it.

One time I was working and noticed out the window that this woman, who was wearing a full-length formal gown, was setting up a camera tripod on a regular sidewalk (full of regular people just going about their day, but she looked like she was going to a gala).

She also had a big Starbucks cup, and for the next 15 minutes, she made that sidewalk her personal catwalk and modeled the shit out of that Starbucks cup.

Why? Who knows! Maybe whatever Starbucks sponsorship she had or, way sadder, was hoping to get… But it was fucking hilarious. Prancing up and down, posing, videos, photos — watching it was honestly one of the funniest things that ever happened at that job.

She DID NOT GIVE A SHIT. I honestly respect that woman lmao I could never do that

69

u/Ya-Dikobraz Feb 07 '23

People like instagrammers do get sponsors that pay them to do videos. For some it's a career. Because to make it a career one has to do it full time. So when someone is doing something like that full time it looks weird to the rest of us because we assume they are just fooling around.

And that's fine. I have an issue where they take it too far and it ends up in something like animal abuse or something simply illegal. Or just the usual annoying the people around you.

37

u/Perfect-Welcome-1572 Feb 07 '23

The thing is, the percentage of people that “make it” has to be insanely low.

I’m older, so I’m sure that’s why, but I know two successful pro athletes and yet zero successful “content creators”

Blame the people on their profile that liked and commented and subscribed and gave to their patreon.

The failsafe for people acting like fucking dickheads is the public shaming and ostracizing them. When the public gives them attention, money, clout, whatever, it’s the public’s fault.

My favorite part of the pandemic was when people were scared of Costco. The food samples were gone. People didn't bring their kids. People didn't bring their excited families. Shopping trips were like special forces missions. In and out quickly, using the minimum time necessary to do the job.

Now we're back to 7 people in a group, with none of them seeming to be looking in the direction they are pushing the cart.

I used to instacart at Costco a lot and it was always an adrenaline-fueled fever dream. Add in the time limits for shopping trips, and I was sprinting all over the store.

15

u/DoctorOsmium Feb 08 '23

Also for some reason people in Costco like to slump over their carts and push them at 1.5 mph for some reason, and the things are too damn wide to maneuver around. If you miss an item in an aisle it's a whole six month voyage to double back and get it.

u/cumquistador6969 Feb 07 '23

Couple of things.

One being selection bias, how would you see it if there wasn't a third person filming?

Furthermore, there's a rather strong tendency to whip out a phone and record people being colossal idiots/assholes in public.

So that probably accounts for a lot of why this "always" seems to happen.

Of course, there are also a variety of reasons for the same people filming to have a third person filming them filming.

They might do some side content with that perspective, the third person filming perspective might have been the planned perspective all along and they don't give a shit about the dancing but intend to market the third person video on the fact they're being such assholes, etc.

In this case it's probably one of the latter options because the OP video is too high def and smooth. It's not impossible to achieve with a fancy iphone as a random bystander, but makes it less likely to actually be unrelated to them filming this.

That’s when you just stand behind the dancing girl or get between her and the camera person. Just stand there. People are trying to get their stuff and get back to their lives, no one needs to accommodate this crap.
